My entry for the Kakashi/Sakura Classy Fanart Contest over at the Narutofan forums. For the contest, you had to create a reinterpretation of a museum fine art piece featuring Kakashi and Sakura in a Naruto-ified setting.
The painting I chose was The Arnolfini Marriage by Jan Van Eyck. It's been one of my favorite paintings for years, so taking a crack at reinterpreting it was a lot of fun.

I chose to go with Japanese-style wedding garb for the picture; this is supposed to be post-ceremony, so Sakura is wearing the colorful over-kimono and doesn't have on the traditional bridal headpiece. I imagine that they're posing at their new apartment for a picture (probably taken by Naruto.)
I wanted to try using a more painterly coloring technique here, so I ended up lightening the linework a bit. I also wanted to try out some new hair coloring techniques, and I really like the result. Kakashi's hair gave me a bit of a headache when I was trying to figure out how to interpret it, but I'm happy with how it came out. The color palette is almost entirely taken directly from or mixed from the colors of the original painting,
I agonized over the background for a long time, and ended up having to rush it a bit at the last minute; I decided to just go with something with a similar composition to the original. The bedspread is modeled on the one seen in Kakashi's apartment in the anime. To replace the focal point of the original painting, I decided to use a portrait of Team 7. It still feels to me like the background is missing something, but I've decided to just leave it as is.
I think my favorite part of the painting besides Kakashi's hair is actually Pakkun, I'm pretty happy with how he looks. I like how the oranges on the chest by the window came out too.
Check out the voting thread that I linked above to see some of the other entries, and vote on your favorite; a whole bunch of great artists participated. :)
